Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA) Insurance
All Albertans involved in a car accident or collision, regardless of who is at fault, are covered under Section B Medical Payments coverage of the Automobile Accident Insurance Benefits Regulation (AAIBR), and the Alberta Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols DTPR.
Here are our recommendations
Steps to Take After MVA
Step One - Doctor
See a Primary Health Care Practitioner - Family doctor or Walk-in doctor
Step Two - Police
File an injury accident report with the police.
Step Three - Physiotherapist
Call and book an appointment with a physiotherapy clinic near you. They should help you fill up AB-1 form
Step Four - MVA Insurance
You will be contacted about the benefits you are entitled to receive after the insurance company reviews your completed form.
Step Five - Lawyer
Speak with a MVA lawyer to find out whether the severity of your claim requires a lawyer to represent you. Most MVA lawyers in Alberta offers a 30 to 35% contingency fee split, which means they will split 30% of your settlement payout from the insurance.
Step Six - Psychologist
DTPR covers a combined total of $1000 for psychological and other supportive therapy services. If you require an assessment and further therapy support, we are also able to provide that to assess for PTSD.
Mental Health Support After Accident
At Innerlogue Therapy & Psychology, we offer comprehensive psychological assessment and treatment services for adults, children, and youth experiencing symptoms related to traumatic events or a buildup of distressing experiences. These symptoms can significantly impact daily functioning, making it challenging for individuals to cope with everyday life. Traumatic experiences may include motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), sexual assault or abuse, natural disasters, physical assault, workplace injuries, various forms of childhood abuse, sudden or unexpected loss, and situations that pose a threat to one’s life.
Our approach to trauma care focuses on creating a supportive and safe environment where clients can work through their experiences at their own pace. We recognize that the effects of trauma can manifest in many ways, such as anxiety, depression, flashbacks, emotional numbness, or difficulty concentrating. Our therapists are skilled in evidence-based treatments, including EMDR and trauma-focused therapies, designed to help individuals process these experiences and regain a sense of control over their lives.
Insurance Coverage for first 90 days post MVA
The Alberta Government’s Bill 41, the Insurance Amendment Act, 2020, grants MVA-related injury sufferers access to supplementary healthcare providers like dentists, occupational therapists, and psychologists. However, these benefits are capped at $1,000 for such therapy, and access expires 90 days after the MVA date. Even after 90 days, you might still qualify for psychological support coverage fully paid by your Motor Vehicle Accident and health benefits. Speak with us to find out more.
Did you know that your MVA insurance will cover your psychological fees?
Many individuals involved in motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) may not realize that they are eligible to receive specialized trauma therapy or counselling at no cost. While physical injuries often receive immediate attention, the emotional and psychological effects of the accident can be overlooked, especially in young children who may struggle to express their feelings or understand their experiences. At Innerlogue Therapy & Psychology, we have psychologists trained in effective trauma therapies, such as EMDR and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to support individuals in their recovery and rehabilitation.
Addressing the emotional impact of an MVA is crucial, as untreated psychological symptoms can lead to long-term challenges in health, daily functioning, and overall well-being. In Alberta, anyone who has experienced physical or psychological symptoms due to an MVA within the last two years may be entitled to treatment, which is covered by their automobile insurance as mandated by law. This means that victims can access the necessary psychological care without out-of-pocket expenses.
To start the process of receiving psychological treatment, MVA victims only need to contact our office with their insurance information and claim number. Our team will take care of the rest, including conducting an assessment, developing a treatment plan, and obtaining approval for coverage. We aim to make the process as straightforward as possible by handling communication with the insurance provider and directly billing the automobile insurer for the services.
